~The Lord's Prayer~

Beyond the Words

 by Greg Birdwhistlell

"ON EARTH AS IN HEAVEN"

“Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.”

C.S. Lewis quotes (British Scholar and Novelist. 1898-1963)

“Heaven is in my perception of this world. Heaven emanates from within and I can observe it, deny it or interact with it to shape my experience of life.” gb

Are earth and heaven separated by any more than a thin veil of perception? If so,  heaven is at one time, a very real place and a very imaginative place. As believers we have the testimonies of prophets who were transported to heaven recorded for us and we have our individual imaginations of heaven.

The veil of perception clouds our vision of heaven. Our lack of focus on the familiar leads us past opportunities for witnessing God at work in the world; the change of the seasons, the sun or moon rise or set, new buds in the spring or the shape of a snowflake. There is also the smile of a stranger when you share an “ah ha” moment or the inner warmth felt when you reach out to someone in kindness and love without thinking of a return. All examples of heaven on earth, a glimpse through the veil.

To expound upon the C.S. Lewis quote above:  if you look through the veil for heaven you also see the earth and experience the awe and wonder of the workings of this planet (ants, earthworms and honey bees seem insignificant until you learn what would happen to our world without them) but looking only at the earth you will never open the veil and see the heaven of creation that surrounds us.

Jesus taught us in parables what heaven is like and the examples indicate growth, value and presence. Heaven is God’s Kingdom and when God’s Kingdom comes to earth we will know heaven in our lives. Eben Alexander M.D. records the vision of heaven he experienced in his book “Proof of Heaven” (Simon and Shuster 2012) “Below me there was countryside. It was green, lush and earthlike. It was earth but at the same time it wasn’t.” (learn more at http://www.ebenalexander.com/ )

The record of Dr. Alexander’s experience makes me wonder if the earth’s creation was a completely new idea or did God want to share the amenities of home?

What do you think?
